Happy 4th of July, Independence Day, and Birthday to the greatest country in the history of mankind (peoplekind for those of you following in Canada). I use ‘mankind’ intentionally here and let me explain why.
Andrew Klavan ( #SaveTheKlavan #NoEs ) often points out the contribution of man to the world in a way that doesn’t require you to believe in a higher power, although it is certainly not an argument against belief. He states, and I paraphrase, “when I hear people say the world is being destroyed because human beings are a parasite, I ask them one simple thing. Would the world be a more beautiful place without the human race? The only possible answer to that question is ‘No’ because ‘beauty’ is a human invention, and without people, there is no such thing as a beautiful anything.”
I bring this up because we don’t take our time to understand the contribution we make to the world when we are free to think independently and make our own mark. We all create beauty. Some of us are artists who create beautiful paintings or music. Some of us are authors and writers who create beautiful works that explain the human mind through narrative. Some of us are garbagemen who collect the broken and discarded scraps of others and use the compensation for that work to build and create new works of beauty for our families to enjoy (my point being you don’t have to be an artist or author to create beautiful things).
To clarify my point above, we can all create beauty when we allow ourselves to do so. This is called liberty, and there is no better country in the world who exports liberty like the United States of America does. America hasn’t always lived up to the expectations she holds herself to, but the drive towards liberty that is spread throughout the world has never wavered as the main goal of the American experiment. The Statue of Liberty still stands tall.
Thank you to all who have sacrificed to keep this experiment in liberty going, and thank you for making the world a beautiful place on this 4th of July.
