I'm taking some time to read books and material I actually enjoy (sorry for those of you who came here because of my How To Be An Antiracist and The New Jim Crow reviews - I swear I'll get back to them). Right now I'm focusing on reading The True Believer by Eric Hoffer, a book I had recommended to me by several people and I recommend it to everyone else as well.
There are several passages that struck me, but there is one in particular I want to write something about. This post is not that attempt, but I want to use it as a way to remind me what to focus on next. The following quote is in Part 3: United Action and Self-Sacrifice on page 83.
I've struggled to properly identify the harmful cultural movement we are seeing today. I've had a few conversations with others in the past, including several podcasts with Truman of @ReturnToReason, attempting to characterize this mass movement and their methods of indoctrination and intimidation. Eric Hoffer identifies one of those elements very clearly here.
Other than it's safe to say we are witnessing a religious mass movement today - the religion of Wokeism - one of their methods of indoctrination and intimidation that is becoming more and more apparent every day - their own version of the Iron Curtain. Hoffer is right: "The curtain is both physical and psychological." We don't see it much today in it's physical form, but we do see it in the form of cancel culture. Physical barriers in 2021 are not as effective as non-tangible online alternatives. Cancel culture is the "physical" part of their Iron Curtain.
Then more psychological component of their Iron Curtain is the media and entertainment blackout (and other forms of propaganda) of anything outside their rigid ideology. Everything must point towards the affirmation of their ideology or it is deemed hateful, racist, transphobic, etc. Anyone willing to step outside of this psychological barrier is threatened with the Iron Fist of cancel culture and a little time in the gulag if needed.
I plan on expanding upon this idea in full article (and possible podcast) form, but I want to get your opinion first. Does this make sense? Am I on the right track?
I was listening to some news updates when I heard this CNN clip about the potentially hazardous water in East Palestine, and as soon as I heard her ask the question about whether or not her guest would drink the water, I IMMEDIATELY thought of this clip from South Park. Enjoy.

In this episode of The Engineering Politics Podcast, I team up with Truman from @ReturnToReason to interview one of the most intelligent and influential creators in the space of philosophy today. Stephen R.C. Hicks is a Professor of Philosophy at Rockford University, Executive Director of the Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship, and Senior Scholar at The Atlas Society. He has written many books including Explaining Postmodernism and Nietzsche and the Nazis. We bring him on to talk about the social and political issues we are currently facing in America, and the West more broadly, and what the collectivist ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau might have to do with it.
