I promise you, I'm not gone. I've been taking my time on some new ideas. I guess I consider it a kind of internal struggle. I've always tried to view the human condition (and really us as human beings) as not inherently bad and not inherently good. I think we are consumed with either bad or good ideas. They way people characterize you, or the way you characterize yourself when you're being honest, is never in a static state. You can be good one day and bad the next. It's ultimately up to you to choose how you want to be that day.
It's a struggle sometimes to not just think there are some awful people out there. People so deeply consumed by bad ideas that there is no way to come back. This is the point in which we give up. Give up on people. Give up on friends. Give up on family. Give up on fellow Americans (or any countrymen you share a bond with). When we believe that evil can just be attributed to someone depending on what political team that person is affiliated with, we lose hope. We turn hope into despair which eventually leads to resentment. We must fight this urge.
My struggle is how to fight this urge. I don't believe in using policy, and therefore, the government gun, to force people to act morally. The idea that we all have God-given rights can be weaponized to do some very bad things when we don't recognize we also have a duty to act morally. When a society loses that sense of duty, morality goes out the door with it. Or at least morality tethered to a concrete structure. God-given rights doesn't really work without the God part which implies duty.
So, my question is - how do we course correct and leave the path we are on? How do we fight those willing to use the government gun when we aren't willing to pick up a gun ourselves (metaphorically). We conservatives love to say, "the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." Does this not apply here?
I know this is a bit abstract since I'm not using a tangible example, but it seems to be applying to several different things at once. Fighting back against racism via antiracism in schools. Fighting back against those who are using fear to keep us from living our lives (disproportionately hurting children). Using pseudoscience to force people to believe there is no such thing as male and female. Fighting back against the destruction of what's left of our free economy. There are so many battles taking place at one time and it's hard to not condemn half the country (and half the world it seems) for sitting it out. I don't know if it's out of ignorance, fear, indoctrination, loss of faith, or a combination of all those things. I'm not sure, but we must find a way to break through ideological lines and bring back faith, reason, and hope again.
