Here is another story I'm republishing on Medium. In this article, I point out a major flaw in conservative politics - ignoring culture. Even though a prominent conservative came up with the popular phrase, "politics is downstream from culture," conservatives have ignored this fact time and time again. I attempt to explain why this is so and how we can turn that around.
If you've followed my work, you know this is a common theme in much of what I do. I try to point out that the trends we see in the culture at-large is what we will see in the near future in our politics, but I want to make one clarifying statement. Politics is downstream from culture DOES NOT mean politics cannot affect culture. It can and often does. The problem is when we try to use politics to affect culture. When we implement a policy with the purpose of changing culture, take the War on Drugs or the War on Poverty as an example, it's like swimming upstream where the effort never worth the results, and, in fact, the exact opposite consequences will be seen when compared to the intended consequences. This is why the "stream" analogy works so well.
